Fact Table
 
Usually the primary table that contains measurements (mostly numeric data like grade, wages, etc.). Also see dimension table. Imagine looking at a spreadsheet. The row and column names would be the dimensions and the numeric data within would be the facts.
 
Fastload
 
A technology that typically replaces a specific DBMS loadfunction. A fastload technology obtains significantly faster load times by preprocessing data and bypassing data integrity checks and logging.
 
 Feasibility
 
The mechanism for balancing business constraints with technology constraints to produce a cost-effective solution.
 
Feedback Session
 
A meeting organized to present work in progress in order to gain feedback.
 
Field
 
A means of implementing an item of data within a file. It can be in character, date, number, or other format and be optional or mandatory.
 
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
 
The physical movement of data files between applications, often across sites.
 
Filters
 
Saved sets of chosen criteria that specify a subset of information in a data warehouse.
 
Focus Area
 

1. A group of associated activities that define and establish program level deliverables, i.e. standards, configuration, and processes. These deliverables are used by multiple projects creating commonality and reusability across the program.

2. A team of individuals working within the Program Office framework for a common family of processes. These focus areas could also be referred to as Program Office Projects.

3. A scoped area of the client organization with common responsibilities and information requirements. The focus area provides the scope for incremental development efforts and may be referred to as the INCREMENT . The focus area can overlap business functions or may reside in a specific business function.

 
Focus Group
 
A small group selected to provide opinions and responses to topics or issues presented in a group setting; an assessment technique.
 
Foredata
 
A new term developed from fore, meaning beforehand, up front, at or near the front. Foredata are all data about the objects and events, including both praedata and paradata. Foredata are the upfront data that an organization sees about objects and events.
 
Foreign Key
 
One or more columns in a relational database table that implement a many-to-one relationship that the table in question has with another table or with itself.
 
Format
 
The type of data that an attribute or column may represent; for example, character, date, number, sound, or image.
 
Four-Schema Concept
 
A concept that resolves problems with the three-schema concept. It includes a physical schema, a logical schema, a data view schema, and a business schema.
 
Functional Data Warehouse
 
A warehouse that draws data from nearby operational systems. Each functional warehouse serves a distinct and separate group (such as a division), functional area (such as manufacturing), geographic unit, or product marketing group.
